2022 Pie & AI Ambassador Spotlight: Suang Lim

Why did you join the DeepLearning.AI community as an event ambassador?

I felt that DeepLearning.AI is a great platform to share the work of Singapore’s AI researchers and students and also to help them connect with the wider global community. Furthermore, with new exciting developments happening almost on a daily basis in the field of AI and Data Science, the DeepLearning.AI community offers a convenient and effective channel for us to learn from each other.

What do you do when you are not hosting events with DeepLearning.AI

My work can be partitioned into three parts – teaching, industry engagement and research. I teach subjects such as inferential statistics, natural language processing and data storytelling to the postgraduate students who are taking Master of Technology in Enterprise Business Analytics (EBAC) at the National University of Singapore. In terms of industry engagement, our team regularly reaches out to our industry partners and helps them identify opportunities to enhance their existing work processes and achieve greater success. Last but not least, I am also involved in conducting practice-based research, focusing on the applications of latest techniques and algorithms to various industries in consideration of their unique contexts.

When I am off from work, I am involved in a mentoring programme for the youths in Singapore as well as community patrols to create a safer neighborhood for everyone.

Describe a few highlights from your event ambassador experience.

By inviting the PhD students in the university to showcase their work via the Pie & AI events, they are able to think deeper into the potential impact and applications. The biggest challenge when hosting the event is to moderate the conversations when we have an enthusiastic audience posing multiple questions to the speaker. The first Pie & AI event is the most memorable to me, since I have to constantly check and ensure that everything goes smoothly.

What have you learned/gained since joining the DeepLearning.AI community?

Since joining the DeepLearning.AI community the greatest gain is getting to know and connect with like-minded people from other countries. By attending each other’s events, I get to understand more about various interesting projects, some of which are actually relevant and applicable to the companies I am working with.
